Scotland youth international Ethan Sutherland switches international allegiance to Zimbabwe

By Zim Sport Live

Rising Wolverhampton Wanderers starlet Ethan Sutherland has officially committed his international future to the Zimbabwe national team, a move confirmed following meetings with the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) in London.

The 19-year-old winger, who previously represented Scotland at U19 level, has agreed to switch allegiance to Zimbabwe as the country intensifies preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

ZIFA has been actively pursuing young UK-born players of Zimbabwean heritage to strengthen the Warriors’ squad. Head coach Michael Nees is leading the charge, focusing on players with dual eligibility who can make a long-term impact.

Sutherland becomes the latest talent identified in this initiative. Born in Scotland to a Zimbabwean mother and a Scottish father, the promising winger qualifies to represent either nation at the senior level.

The Zimbabwe FA has already initiated the FIFA process to formalize Sutherland’s nationality switch. Officials met with the player and his family in London to finalize the decision, which is now awaiting international clearance.

Sutherland began his football journey at St. Mirren in Scotland before joining Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Although yet to feature for Wolves’ first team, he is currently gaining valuable experience on loan at National League club Solihull Moors.

He made his debut for Scotland’s U19s in October 2024 during a 2–1 win against Hungary, accumulating three caps but never breaking into the senior side. Known for his pace and versatility, he can operate both as a winger and a right back.

If FIFA approves the switch, Sutherland will join a growing group of UK-born players who have chosen to represent Zimbabwe, including Jordan Zemura, Tawanda Chirewa, Andy Rinomhota, and Marley Tavaziva.

Sutherland’s addition is a major boost for Zimbabwe as they build a competitive squad for AFCON 2025. His technical ability, European training, and youthful energy align with ZIFA’s broader vision to elevate the country’s performance on the continental stage.

As Zimbabwe looks to return to the African football elite, the decision by Sutherland marks a symbolic and strategic win for the national team.
